Description
Surendranath Sen’s Administrative System of the Marathas examines the institutions that sustained Maratha power, shifting attention from campaigns and conquest to the practical machinery of government. It is a substantial study of political organisation under Shivaji and the Peshwas, with comparative discussions tracing what Sen regarded as inheritances from earlier Hindu and Muslim administrative traditions. Its four internal books range from Shivaji’s central government and Ashta Pradhan council to village communities, district and provincial administration, and the Peshwa secretariat. Revenue and finance receive detailed treatment, alongside the army and navy, judicial institutions, prisons, policing and karkhanas. Appendices, a glossary, bibliography and index accompany the text. Particularly engaging documentary details include military establishment and pay schedules, concessions for coconut and other plantations, and Devanagari transcriptions of variant Shivarai coin legends. This single-volume hardbound copy bears the Calcutta imprint of K. P. Bagchi & Company and retains its orange dust jacket, lettered in black with an uncaptioned white oval line portrait.
