Description
Chosen and edited by H. K. Kaul, Historic Delhi brings together historical voices to evoke the successive cities and changing fortunes of India’s capital. This substantial illustrated anthology draws on earlier books and documents rather than presenting a continuous single-author history, offering a many-sided portrait of Delhi’s rulers, monuments and inhabitants. The selections extend from ancient traditions to the early twentieth century, combining conquest and court ceremony with observations on commerce, education, festivals, food and everyday customs. Architecture, gardens and urban life broaden its scope beyond political events. Maurice Dekobra’s account of New Delhi, dated 1931, carries the reader into the era of the new imperial capital. A bibliography and index provide useful reference apparatus. Historical-image reproductions include an elephant-procession frontispiece, views of Tughlaqabad and Sher Shah’s fort and mosque, Safdar Jang’s tomb, and portraits of Zeenat Mahal Begum and Bahadur Shah Zafar. A map of Kilah Rai Pithora and its surroundings is reproduced from Fanshawe’s Delhi: Past and Present. Published by Oxford University Press, Delhi, in 1985, this copy is bound in blue cloth with gilt spine lettering and the Oxford device. The cloth is rubbed, marked and pale-spotted, with abrasions and wear to joints, edges, corners and spine ends, particularly fraying at the head. Examined leaves show light toning; no dust jacket is shown. Completeness has not been established.
