Description
An illustrated survey of India’s history, peoples and landscapes, combining a popular historical outline with descriptions of cities, monuments, religions and social customs. Written from a colonial-era perspective, Forbes-Lindsay ranges from Bombay’s neighbouring cave temples and the Deccan to southern temple centres, Delhi, the Rajput cities, Agra and Buddhist sacred places. Its geographical reach extends to Lahore, Peshawar and the Khyber Pass, as well as Kashmir, Nepal, Sikkim and Ceylon; a glossary and index conclude Volume II. The illustrations embrace architecture, occupations, portraits and mountain scenery. Present here are the folding coloured map, “The Indian Empire,” and monochrome plates with captioned tissue guards, including “Panorama of Dárjiling,” “Girls of Kashmir” and “Panorama of Kashmir.” Two matching volumes in dark-blue cloth, richly blocked in gilt with floral and foliate ornament enclosing domed architectural views, with similarly decorated and lettered spines. The 1903 Coates publication is bibliographically identified as the first edition; Volume I’s title page is printed in orange and black. Ribbon markers survive. Cloth shows rubbing and light fraying, with light leaf-toning, occasional spotting and map-fold creases. Completeness of text, plates and maps has not been established.
